Staycation 2015: Our Tucson Adventure

You know what sucks about vacation?

The driving there. Oh, and the driving back. There's also staying in hotels with kids who insist they need to share your bed, splitting a single toilet between 4 people (2 of whom either don't have to pee or HAVE TO PEE RIGHT NOW OR OMG I'M GOING TO DIE), and paying crazy amounts to eat out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

So we didn't go on a vacation.

While staycations are actually pretty trendy right now, our motivation to take one was less from a desire to be cool and based more on our bank account and the lingering mental trauma from last year's cross-country move.

Plus, our city is pretty awesome anyway. Who needs to go somewhere when Tucson has so much to offer? And no, we didn't take any hikes, because going to the mountains or canyon any time after sunrise during the summer months is pretty much the most awful thing I can think of, and mama ain't getting out bed that early during vacation staycation.

Here are the highlights from our 3-day Tucson staycation.

The castle-themed arcade:

These awesome miniatures from The Mini Time Machine:

Eegees. 'Nuf said.

The surprisingly active animals at the Reid Park Zoo. Except for the rhino, but that dude's always pretty chill.

Oh, and this, because life hates us, and we've already blown enough trying to fix a problem that everyone totally promises they fixed this time.

Overall, it was wonderful. We only ate out once (except for the Eegees excursion, but c'mon, that's pretty much mandatory), used our annual passes to get into the zoo, swam at the YMCA with our membership, visited our local used bookstore, packed snacks, drinks, and lunches for while we were out, and ate dinner at home.

And I only had to set my alarm clock once, even if I did sleep right through it.

Have you gone anywhere fun this summer? Or are you chilling at home?

  1. Sounds like so much fun! Since we're still trying to sell our home and buy a new one we don't have the money or sanity to do much. We're sticking around the apartment, walking to the park or the pool each day. Just trying not to go crazy from stress. :)

    1. Pools are definitely where it's at in the summer! Hopefully your house will sell soon and you guys can settled into your home. :)

  2. Sounds like a great idea! We normally have a big holiday, but this year we are driving to Disneyland Paris, staying one day, coming back. We've recently moved too and have a little left over. Hope our car behaves because it's a bit like yours sounds!

    1. Oh I'm so jealous that you'll be heading to Disneyland, even for a day! Hope your vehicle holds out. We just got our van back out of the shop (again) and we're now waiting a few weeks for a new part.

  3. Sounds wonderful. Sometimes we don't have the time to enjoy the attractions that are on our doorstep. Your kids are adorable!

    1. It's true, we really don't! Even though we've tried to stay pretty active this summer, I didn't realize how repetitive we'd become in what we're doing. And thanks! I'm definitely biased, but I totally think they are, haha.

  4. We usually stay at home, mostly due to our lack of organisation of booking a holiday. It only just occurred to me that I ought to take some time off work to spend with the kids!!

    1. That's another good thing about staycations; a lot of planning isn't totally necessary. We mapped out what we were going to do on which days the night before so we could make sure we'd pack the right amount of lunch and snacks, and that was about it!

  5. Sometimes traveling with kids can be an....adventure, but I know that once they get older, I'll look back and miss these days. Glad you had a good time.

Thanks for visiting my blog today. To answer your question, the updated version of the book has a few details referencing modern technology, like the Internet, that sort of thing. The details don't hurt the book, but I don't think they're needed because the original book stood strong on its own.

    1. P.S. There are a few other things that are different in the updated book as well. Some names were changed I think, and a few scenes were slightly altered.
